Here at Oaktree Court, we believe that there is something incredibly special about the connection between grandparents and grandchildren. That connection is built on cherished memories. For Poppy and her grandmother, Vivienne, that connection grew even stronger through their time spent at Oaktree Court.

Earlier this year, Poppy visited Oaktree Court, in the heart of the Somerset countryside, to complete voluntary hours for her Duke of Edinburgh Award. From the moment she stepped into the Somerset Suite one Friday afternoon, something clicked. She found herself quickly forming connections with our residents, chatting with them, sharing stories, and bringing youthful energy to the room. It was more than just volunteering, it felt like home.

During her visit, Poppy opened up about her beloved Granny, Vivienne, who lives with a dementia. She told us how much she wished Vivienne could live at Oaktree Court, where the atmosphere was so warm, the residents so welcoming, and the team so caring.

Inspired by her experience, Poppy spoke to her parents about how much she would love her Granny to move to Oaktree Court. It wasn’t long before Vivienne’s daughter reached out to us and Vivienne joined us as a resident in the very same Somerset Suite that had captured Poppy’s heart. But the story didn’t end there. Poppy continued her visits every Friday afternoon, always with a smile and a kind word for everyone she met.

Poppy's dedication and love for the home led her to ask if she could do her school work experience with us. Of course, we said yes, and she spent a joyful week with our Activities Team, bringing creativity, compassion, and so much positivity to the home. Poppy described Oaktree Court as “so welcoming” and said she was truly grateful that her Granny had come to live here. It meant the world to her and her family to know that Vivienne was surrounded by people who truly care.
