Ken, a proud World War II veteran and cherished resident at Oaktree Court Care Home, attended the prestigious Buckingham Palace Garden Party after being invited in recognition of his wartime service and dedication as a veteran of the Burma campaign in India.

Accompanied by his daughter Jane and Oaktree Court Activities Lead Nicky, Ken described the occasion as “a tremendous honour” as he was formally presented in front of Her Royal Highness during the royal event. Following the presentation, the group enjoyed traditional afternoon tea within the palace grounds before taking a stroll through the beautiful royal gardens, creating memories Ken and his family will treasure forever.

The special visit comes just a couple of weeks before Ken celebrates another incredible milestone, his 102nd birthday on 4th June. For the team at Oaktree Court, the day perfectly reflects the home’s philosophy of creating meaningful, person-led experiences that celebrate individuality, adventure, and lifelong passions.

“Ken’s story is extraordinary, and it was an absolute privilege to support him in attending such a special occasion,” said Nicky, Activities Lead at Oaktree Court. “At Oaktree Court, we believe care should never stop someone from living life to the fullest. Creating magical ‘just for me’ moments like this is at the heart of everything we do.”

Ken’s life has been defined by courage, resilience, and humility. He served in the British Armed Forces during World War II from 1942 to 1946, before continuing his service in the reserves until 1951. He was later awarded the prestigious Burma Star Medal in recognition of his bravery and loyal service.

Last year, Ken proudly led fellow centenarian veterans during the National Service of Remembrance parade at The Cenotaph and attended the Festival of Remembrance at Royal Albert Hall, where he was interviewed by both the BBC and Sky News about his wartime experiences.

Now living at Oaktree Court in Wellington, Ken continues to inspire everyone around him by sharing his stories with fellow residents, team members, visitors, and the local veteran community. Oaktree Court hold regular Royal British Legion gatherings and proudly hosts a monthly Veterans’ Breakfast at the home, bringing veterans together for friendship, conversation, and remembrance.

At Oaktree Court, these deeply personal experiences are what care is all about.
